Johan Bosch is a Johannesburg-based contemporary South African artist specialising in original oil and acrylic paintings.
His Nukleus series examines the complexities of human experience through symbolic room paintings, where familiar interiors become spaces of memory, emotion and quiet contemplation.
At first glance, these paintings depict ordinary rooms. Yet carefully arranged objects, subtle symbolism and unexpected visual relationships suggest stories that extend beyond the visible scene. Each room can be interpreted as a psychological space rather than simply a physical interior, where absence becomes a form of presence.
Combining elements of surrealism and contemporary figurative art, Bosch explores solitude, connection, identity and the passage of time. Rather than offering fixed narratives, his paintings invite viewers to discover personal meanings within each composition. Through colour, atmosphere and visual storytelling, Nukleus transforms everyday interiors into thought-provoking contemporary artworks, reflecting the relationship between our external surroundings and our inner emotional lives.
